Shanghai, October 17 (Gasgoo.com) The Shanghai-based new wholly-owned facility of GKN Driveline Torque Technology has started operation, the company said on October 15.

Mass production at the plant of 4,400 square meters in the Shanghai Pudong Kangqiao Industrial Zone began with the manufacture of transmission differentials for major domestic and overseas carmakers.

"This is an important milestone for our expanding presence in China," said Graeme Walford, managing director of GKN Driveline Torque Technology. "From our new strategically-located base, we now can offer a wider range of our torque products to the Chinese car industry, as well as for export."

In addition to the supply of transmission differentials, GKN Driveline is developing three all wheel drive (AWD) power transfer unit (PTU) applications which will enter production in 2009 for Chinese and Asian vehicle makers.

GKN is the leading producer of driveline components in China, where the company is the first major European auto-parts supplier to invest. GKN Driveline currently has auto-parts making operations in Kangqiao, Zhoupu and Shenjiang in Pudong, Shanghai, as well as plants in Chongqing and Jilin.

With 21,000 employees and 40 facilities in 30 countries, GKN Driveline is a global tier-one supplier of vehicle driveline components and systems, achieving annual sales of 3 billion euros (27.6 billion yuan).
