Shanghai, November 20 (Gasgoo.com) The Beijing city government has decided not to restrict the vehicle number, purchases and license plates while seeking solutions to the traffic jam, announced by Wang Haiping, vice director of Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform yesterday, according to xinhuanet.com.

During the Olympics and Paralympics, Beijing succeeded in keeping the Chinese capital's air clean and traffic smooth through banning vehicles with even- and odd-numbered license plates away from roads on alternate days.

Wang said it is "improper” to solve traffic problems by limiting vehicle buying and use as well as car plates, considering the future sustainable economic growth, auto industry development and living standard improvement.

To solve the traffic jam, Beijing will enhance the construction of rapid transit systems and public bus transportation system.

It is reported that from now to 2010, Beijing will invest 90 billion yuan ($13.18 billion) for rapid transit extension, which will total 300km around the capital city.
