Shanghai, April 9 (Gasgoo.com) General Motors Corp aims to double its annual sales in China to 2 million vehicles in five years, the Shanghai Securities News said on Thursday, citing a company spokesman.

To meet that target, the U.S. auto maker plans to add more than 30 new or upgraded models in China in the next five years, Sophia Luan, GM's spokeswoman in China, was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

"Though it faces the threat of bankruptcy domestically, GM will carry out its commitment to the China market and continue to provide technical and product support for its Chinese ventures," said Kevin Wale, president of the GM China Group,

He added that GM's eight joint ventures in China have enough capital for further investment.

GM said on Wednesday its China sales in March rose 24.6 percent from a year earlier to 137,004 vehicles, setting a company record for monthly sales. GM attributed the strong sales growth to new product offerings.
