Shanghai, December 9 (Gasgoo.com) Last month, China sold 1.04 million passenger cars, up 98% year on year, the most in at least five years, media reported. The BYD F3 was the top-selling sedan model during the month, close to 32,000 units.

For the first 11 months, sales of passenger cars, including those of sedans, SUVs and minivans, surged 49.7% to 9.23 million. Government incentives spurred demand in China, which is set to surpass the U.S. as the world's biggest auto market this year.

The best-selling sedan model in November was the F3, a compact sedan made by battery maker turned car manufacturer BYD Auto, at 31,986 units (up from year earlier 17,466), followed by the Buick Excelle, at 22,200 units, according to industry data.

Of the top ten best-selling sedans, the other eight models are: Hyundai Elantra (21,000), VW Jetta (20,500), Honda Accord (17,200), Chery QQ (17,000), VW Lavida (15,400), Toyota Camry (15,100), Xia Li N3 (15,100), and VW Sonata (15,000). The 10 models accounted for 25% of total car sales in November.

Including minivans and other passenger cars, SAIC-GM-Wuling, General Motors' mini-vehicle venture in China, led sales in November, with 83,753 units sold.

Excluding minivans, Shanghai GM, GM's flagship car venture with SAIC Motor, led sales in November at 78,777 units, trailed by FAW-VW, Volkswagen's venture with FAW Group, selling 64,853 units.

BYD sold 50,650 cars in November, up 132.6% from a year earlier. Sales in the first 11 months surged 150.2% to 388,246 units. About two-thirds of the car sales were achieved by its F3 model.
