Shanghai VW leads China car sales in 2009

Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co Ltd sold a total of 708,100 sedans in China last year, ranking first in the top 10 auto producer list released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

FAW-VW Automobile Co Ltd ranked second with 669,200 sedans sold, followed by Shanghai General Motors Co Ltd, Beijing Hyundai Motor Co, Dongfeng Nissan Ltd, BYD Co Ltd, Chery Automobile Co Ltd, Guangqi Honda Automobile Co Ltd, Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor Co Ltd and Geely Holding Group Co Ltd, with sale of 668,200 units, 521,000 units, 459,300 units, 448,400 units, 409,300 units, 337,200 units, 334,700 units and 329,100 units, respectively.

In 2009, the combined sales volume of the ten auto makers amounted to 4.88 million units, accounting for 65% of the total sedan sales in the country.

BYD F3 is the best-selling car model last year, with 291,000 units sold, according to a separate report from the CAAM.
