BYD has not made final solar cell project plan
Wang Jianjun, deputy general manager and spokesman of BYD Co. Ltd., lately attested to earlier reports about its sizable solar cell project, but revealed that the company had not decided how much money would be spent.
Furthermore, it is even unknown whether the project can reach an annual production capacity of 5,000MW, after being operational. As an indigenous manufacturer of rechargeable batteries and vehicles in China, BYD is much optimistic about the solar cell market and considers this business as part of its new energy development strategy.
In fact, such a scheme of 5,000MW seems unbelievable, according to a new energy researcher. Germany, which is the world's biggest photovoltaic (PV) market, is in need of not more than 3,000MW solar cells now.
As for Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd., one of the solar energy front-runners in China, its yearly solar cell production capacity just stands at around 1,000MW.
