And after capacity is expanded, models made by BMW Brilliance will not only meet the domestic demand, but also be exported, said Qi Yumin, chairman of Brilliance Auto Group, at the ground-breaking ceremony of the new plant on June 2.
The previous plant of BMW Brilliance will continue to produce the elongated version of BMW 5 Series and the BMW 3 Series. Meanwhile, the company will build an engine factory near the new plant, Qi said.
Annual capacity of the new 560 million euros ($688 million) plant will be 100,000 units when construction is completed in 2012, and in a long term, the combined annual capacity of the venture's two plants in China will reach 300,000 units, said Norbert Reithofer, chairman of the BMW Group.
Additionally, Chen Zhenggao, Governor of Liaoning Province, said at the ceremony that he hopes BMW Brilliance will import the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 7 Series into China as well. However, Qi responded that this issue is still under discussion.
