Audi AG's (NSU.XE) global sales rose 16% on the year last month to 102,650 cars driven mainly by strong gains in China and the U.S., the German luxury car maker said Thursday.

The new A1 model "will give us extra momentum in Europe in the fourth quarter, " Audi sales chief Peter Schwarzenbauer said in a statement.

"Over two-thirds of the (A1) units that we will have available to ship this year have already been pre-ordered," he added.

Audi's sales in China were up 45% on the year at 22,125 cars in September, compared with a 13% increase in the U.S. to 8,151 cars and a 16% gain in Germany to 18,611 vehicles. China is on track to become Audi's largest single market in 2010.

The Ingolstadt-based firm said it expects to become the best-selling premium brand in France this year for the first time.

In the first nine months, Audi's global sales were up 18% compared with the same period last year at 829,300 vehicles.

Audi is the premium brand and key earnings contributor of Volkswagen AG ( VOW.XE), Europe's largest automaker by sales.
