Volvo recall 113,600 cars in 80 countries

The Swedish automaker, which is owned by China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., is asking owners of 100,100 vehicles worldwide to visit dealers or authorized repair shops to fix a wiring connector that poses a "tiny risk" that an air bag won't function.

A separate recall targets 13,500 S80L cars, sold only in China, to repair a hose leak that may make steering difficult.

Volvo's recall is one of many weekly recalls from various automakers as reported by Manufacturing Digital this month. Volvo will need to tread carefully if it is to protect its reputation as one of the safest brands in the world.

Volvo spokesman, Perake Froberg said: "While 100,000 cars is pretty big for Volvo, this is a fairly small recall from the perspective of the international auto industry."

Volvo Cars has a target of selling 380,000 cars this year. Chief Executive Officer Stefan Jacoby is aiming to more than double deliveries to 800,000 vehicles annually in the next 10 years.

The models affected by the air-bag wiring fault are the S80, S80L, S60, V70 and XC70 as well as the XC60.

The air-bag fault will take about 30 minutes to check and fix and the power steering repair may take two hours. The costs of the recalls is undisclosed.
