GM: China sales top 100,000 units in January

General Motors said today that it sold 101,926 vehicles in China in January, the first time it topped the 100,000 level for a single month.

Sales at its flagship car venture with Shanghai Automotive Co. came to 40,570 units in the month, while sales at its commercial vehicle tie-up in south China totalled 61,200 units, General Motors said in a statement.

It did not give comparative figures.

GM, which competes with Volkswagen AG and others in the world's second-largest auto market, sold 876,747 vehicles in China last year, up 31.8 percent from 2005.

It expected to sell at least 15 percent more vehicles in the country this year, beating an estimated 10-15 percent expansion of the market, GM China president Kevin Wale told Reuters in November.
