Shanghai, March 13 (Gasgoo.com) – Beijing car buyers cannot obtain a local license plate for their newly brought Ssangyong brand vehicles because they fail to meet the upcoming EU-IV emission standards for new vehicles, which become effective in Beijing areas on March 1.
Ssangyong dealers offer a simple solution to their Beijing customers. "We can help you obtain a Tianjin license plate if you agree to pay us another 2000 yuan ($281.7)," said a Ssangyang dealer. Tianjing is neighboring city, about one hundred miles to the east of Beijing.
Ssangyang says it will introduce Rexton vehicle to China, a SUV model that meets EU-IV standards in Beijing.
Worldwide, Ssangyong sold 136,581 vehicles last year, of which 75,965 were exported to the overseas market. It turned profitable for the first time since 2004. Last year, Ssangyong's sales in China jumped more than 100 percent from the previous year.
Currently Ssangyong sells four SUVs--Rexton, Kyron, ActYon and Rodius as well as one sedan model the new Chairman in Chinese market.
Ssangyong and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC)had reached an agreement in 2005 to open a 50:50 joint venture in China to develop SAIC's own brand vehicles, but the plan was postponed due to a union strike last year at Ssangyong, where workers worried that SAIC may finally move Ssangyong's production to China.
Under SAIC's plan, Ssangyong cars will be assembled in China in 2009 at the earliest.
