State Information Center predicted nearly 0.1 billion people will own private cars'09

According to statistics, by the end of 2006, China's private car had reached 20 million units. Since the private cars emerged in 1980's, to 12.19 million vehicles in 2003, it took only three years to reach 20 million.

According to the State Statistical Bureau, by the end of 2005, there were total 31.6 million vehicles nationwide, private cars reached 18.52 million, accounting for 58.6% of total. In 2006, 7 million vehicles were consumed, of which 60% were private purchases. According to experts of the China Automobile Industry Association, there are more than 3,800 vehicles in China, of which private car amount to 22 million vehicles, i.e. 60% of total vehicles.

According to the State Statistical Bureau, in 1990 there were 5.54 million vehicles running in the country, of which 820,000 were private cars, accounting for 14.8%. Of these 82 million private cars, 580,000 were cargo cars and only 240,000 vehicles were passenger cars. From 2003 to 2005, private cargo cars increased to 850,000 units and private passenger cars increased to 6.33 million. In 2006, the sales volume surpassed 710 million units; more than 380 million were sold to private users.
