Great Wall Motor Co., China's largest crossover maker, plans to introduce its premium brand on Nov. 16 in a renewed push to move upscale.

The brand, Wey, is named after Great Wall founder and Chairman Wei Jianjun.

The company says it will unveil the models to be marketed under the Wey brand this week.

Great Wall, established in 1984 in the north China city of Baoding, started out as a manufacturer of pickup trucks and minibuses. By 2003, Wei had transformed the company into the country's largest producer of crossovers.

In the first ten months of the year, Great Wall's deliveries rose 19 percent year on year to 794,836 vehicles.

Most of the growth is due to strong demand for the Haval H6, a compact crossover with a starting price of 80,000 yuan ($11,765).

Sales of the company's pricier SUVs remained limited.

Great Wall is the second major Chinese carmaker to launch a premium brand this year. Last month, Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. unveiled its premium brand, Lynk & Co.

The first Lynk model, a compact crossover dubbed "01", will debut late next year.
