Volvo Cars scores two-digit YoY, MoM growth in May sales of Chinese mainland

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- With a total of 14,061 vehicles sold in May, Volvo Cars witnessed a remarkable year-on-year surge of 48.7% and a month-on-month increase of 12.6% on Chinese mainland.

For the first five months, the Swedish automaker recorded a cumulative sales volume of 62,850 units across the Chinese mainland, representing a solid 17.4% year-on-year growth.

Of particular note is the remarkable performance of Volvo Cars’ electric vehicle lineup. Sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) saw a robust 42% increase from a year ago, accounting for an increase of 1.7 percentage points in the overall sales share.

Breaking down the year-to-date sales data by specific models, the Volvo XC60 accumulated a total of 23,603 units sold from January to May, registering a notable 21% year-on-year growth. The Volvo XC90 also enjoyed strong demand, with 8,228 units sold, reflecting a substantial 32% increase compared to the same period last year. The Volvo S90 also demonstrated impressive sales performance, with a total of 14,609 units sold, representing a year-on-year growth of 49%.

Looking at the sales figures for May alone, the Volvo XC60 has a sales volume of 5,151 units, showcasing a year-on-year growth of 26% and a month-on-month increase of 16%. The Volvo XC90 followed suit, with 1,614 units sold, displaying a year-on-year rise of 24%. Notably, the Volvo S90 experienced a remarkable surge in demand, selling 3,660 units in May, which represents an impressive year-on-year spike of 143% and a month-on-month increase of 18%.

On May 10, Volvo Cars unveiled its new design studio in Shanghai, one of the mega cities in Asia, meaning the automaker’s global design footprint has been further expanded in addition to its existing studios in Gothenburg and Camarillo.

The 5,500-square-meter studio provides top-notch space for more than 100 designers and creative engineers. Mirroring the carmaker’s design headquarters in Gothenburg, the Shanghai studio has all the functions required to facilitate the whole design process, with the capabilities of offering interior, exterior, color and material, as well as UX design to full-sized mass-produced models.
