According to statistics compiled by Gasgoo.com (Chinese), a total of 749,778 SUVs were sold in China in the month of June. That figure represents a year-on-year decrease of 16.1 percent. SUVs accounted for 41.9% of all passenger automobiles sold in the country, up 4.7 percentage points year-on-year.
Domestic own brand SUVs saw their market share increase in June. A total 429,109 own brand SUVs were sold over the course of the month, up 22.5% year-on-year. The Japanese brands’ SUV sales remained stable, with a total 129,631 units sold, representing an increase of 14.4%. German SUV sales grew 51.7%, totaling 82,932 units. American SUV sales totaled 54,063 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 15.0%.
On the together end of the spectrum were Korean SUVs, whose sales fell a huge 74.7% from last year. A total 12,638 units were sold over the course of the month. Sales of flagship Korean brand models fell over nine-tenths.
Compact SUVs continued to make up the majority of vehicles sold over the course of the month, with just over half of all SUVs sold being compacts. Compact SUV sales totaled 393,853 units, increasing 9.7% year-on-year. Small SUV sales increased this month, totaling 169,079 units. Mid-size and full-size SUV sales totaled 159,092 units and 27,754 units, the latter representing an over six-fold increase year-on-year. The market as a whole has been shifting towards smaller, low emission vehicles.
Great Wall Motor was once again the top seller of SUVs in June, followed by Geely Automobile, Changan Automobile, Shanghai VW, Dongfeng Nissan, GAC Group, SAIC-GM-Wuling, Shanghai GM, Dongfeng Honda and SAIC Motor. Although Great Wall’s sales fell, the amount they declined by was less than the previous month. Dongfeng Nissan’s sales also decreased 16.6%, though that decline was due to how the China Passenger Car Association recorded the sales statistics of the updated CR-V. The remaining eight manufacturers in the top ten all saw their sales increase year-on-year. Geely surpassed Changan to rank in the number two spot, chiefly thanks to the outstanding performance of the Emgrand GS. The top performing joint venture enterprise of the month was Shanghai VW, sales of which totaled 41,996 units.
The Great Wall Haval H6 was the best-selling SUV model of the month. It was followed by the GAC Trumpchi GS4, SAIC-GM-Wuling Baojune 510, VW Tiguan, Geely Boyue, Honda XR-V, Nissan X-Trail, Buick Envision, Changan CS75 and Nissan Qashqai. Half of the top ten chart were domestic own brand models.
Sales of the Haval H6 totaled 35,171 units, representing a decrease of 6.3%. It is expected that the H6’s sales will recover after the next generation revision is released.
While the Trumpchi GS4’s sales decreased from the previous month, it still managed to achieve year-on-year growth of around 20%.
The Baojun 510’s monthly sales broke the 30,000 mark. SAIC-GM-Wuling’s other SUV model, the Roewe RX5, was failed to make the top ten this month.
Among JV models, the Nissan X-Trail managed to enter the top 10 with a strong performance of 16,616 units. The Honda XR-V also performed well, with its sales growing 43.7% year-on-year. With a total 19,160 units, it was one of the few small SUVs to break into the top 10.
