Toyota halts production of assembly line in Guangzhou, citing parts shortage

Beijing (Gasgoo)- Toyota stopped the production of an assembly line in its Guangzhou factory on August 4, which was confirmed by the Japanese company. The shortage of some chip-related components resulted in the production adjustment, the company added.

Automotive industry around the world has been affected by chip shortage for a long time. In January this year, GAC Toyota had suspended production for a while due to the semiconductor shortage.

Parts shortage has caused Toyota’s many plants worldwide to suspend production for a period. Last month, Toyota said that the Tahara plant in Aichi Prefecture, producing the Lexus LS and IS models would be closed from August 3 to August 6 while Toyota Auto Body’s Yoshiwara plant would halt production of the Land Cuiser for two days. The reason was that the rising COVID-19 cases in Southeast Asia disrupted parts production.

In Thailand, the automaker also suspended operations at all of its three plants for several days because the COVID-19 forced a parts plant to close. And Toyota also warned that the worldwide chip crunch would last.

According to a Reuter’s report, Honda also stopped the production at its Wuhan plant on Aug. 3 because of a COVID-19 case cluster at a supplier.
